Three Elements of Automotive Stamping

Compared with other methods of mechanical processing and plastic processing, stamping processing has many unique advantages in terms of technology and economy, such as high production efficiency and convenient operation, and it is easy to realize mechanization and automation. This is because stamping relies on dies and stamping equipment to complete the processing. The number of strokes of ordinary presses can reach dozens of times per minute, and high-speed pressure can reach hundreds or even thousands of times per minute, and one stamped part can be attained for each stamping stroke.

What is automotive stamping?

Stamping is the process of stamping and forming sheet metal parts using dies according to the design requirements. The stamping process plays an important role in the automobile manufacturing process. At present, most of the car bodies are made of steel plates and alloys, and they are all stamped to form the appearance the designer wants. Automotive stamping parts include: car damper, exhaust pipe, seat bracket, glass lifter, left/right front fender, left/right outer panel, side wall rear (left/right rear fender), four doors, top cover, trunk panel, floor, front panel, etc.

Three elements of automotive stamping

The three elements of automotive stamping include stamping equipment, stamping mold, and stamping sheets. Automotive stamping equipment is the so-called stamping machine, which can realize cutting, punching, bending, riveting, forming and other operations. The selection of stamping equipment is generally according to the production quantity and equipment size.

Stamping molds are an important part of the production of various industrial products, forming raw materials in specific shapes. Mold has become an important indicator of the development level of modern industry and one of the important symbols of a country's manufacturing level. Stamping mold can be divided into four basic units: punching, bending, stretching, and forming. According to the degree of process combination, they can also be divided into single process mold, composite mold,  progressive mold and so on. Considering the cost factor in the design stage, it is necessary to design stamping solution with as few molds as possible. The changes and modifications of the molds need to be recorded properly to prevent troubles.

Automotive stamping sheet: The body of car is generally made of low-carbon steel, and the skeleton and covering parts of the body are mostly stamped from steel plates. These materials have the characteristics that cracks are not easy to occur during deep drawing. According to the different positions of the car body, galvanized steel sheets are often used for parts that are prone to rust, such as fenders and top covers. High-strength steel plates are used in some parts that are subject to high stress, such as radiator support beams, upper side beams, B-pillars, etc. The thickness of steel plates commonly used in car body structure is 0.6mm to 3mm, and the thickness of most car parts is 0.8mm to 1.0mm.
